Part 1 (8:30-12:30) Art Therapy for Those Affected by Domestic Violence

Treatments that are specifically geared toward trauma recovery include EMDR, narrative therapy, cognitive therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, and trauma-focused CBT (American Psychological Association, 2017). But verbal psychotherapy alone is not enough, as traumatic memories are stored deep into the brain where words cannot access them. Art therapists know this and can uncover these memories by facilitating client expression through images and symbols. The first part of this all-day, pre-conference workshop demonstrates how art making can be used in the treatment of those affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence/intimate partner violence is a widespread human tragedy unfortunately witnesses all over the world. This presentation focuses on how members of a group composed of aggressors and recipients of domestic violence use art in an attempt to tell their stories and heal. Case studies of client artwork created during an 8-week art therapy group at a community center in Argentina will illustrate the struggles experienced by those touched by this familial crisis. Participants will strengthen awareness of the personal and professional competencies necessary for culturally responsible practice when working with populations that don’t necessarily share US cultural norms. Participants will also engage in artmaking to explore their reactions to working with this population.

Part 2 (1:15- 5:00) Ethics, Boundary Issues, and Telehealth: What We Need to Know

The second part of this all-day, pre-conference workshop focuses on ethics, the law, and telehealth. Participants will review the Ethical Principles for Art Therapist (2013), HIPAA, and FERPA mandates to address ethically responsible ways of practicing art therapy and providing services remotely. There will be a focus on best practices related to telehealth. The discussion will also address the art therapist values and moral principles through exercises, and the ethical decision-making process addressing many topics, including the art therapist as a person and as a professional, values, multicultural perspectives in dealing with ethical issues, confidentiality and privacy, multiple and dual relationships, and boundary issues.
